My True Story

Thursday September 17th started out as a normal day for just about everybody but me. I was going to die. I was lying outside a building; lifeless, but still somehow breathing. I don’t know why I was there, how I got there or in such bad shape, but someone—an Angel—found me and made a phone call and soon I was scooped up into a box, covered with a towel and felt like I was going a long way away.

The next thing I knew, a real sweet lady I would come to know as Lorraine lifted off the towel and saw my poor little ice-cold body covered with fleas and she did not hesitate to begin taking care of me. She put me on a heating pad, and boy did that feel great, then she treated me for all those biting buggies. I heard her call a doctor and very soon I was being whisked away again. I was not scared at all. I felt like I was in the presence of my Guardian Angel.

When we stopped, three more people—Angels—came to my aid. They asked if I had a name. Lorraine thought of my life flickering on and off and on and named me Lightning Bug. I liked it! I never had a name before. I’ve only been around for about 10 weeks and I was hoping to be around a lot longer.

The three Angels—2 veterinarians and a tech—had some scary news. My body temperature and heart rate were horribly bad. Near death. They said I was anemic from the fleas and suffering from dehydration, starvation, hypothermia and my belly was full of worms! Yuck! They said I was dying a slow, cruel death. Who would allow a kitten to go through that?

To everyone’s amazement, including my own, my little body reacted real well to all that was being done to help me. My heart rate and body temperature began to climb. My blood sugar was getting normal. My eyes popped open and I finally saw all my Angels! And they were here on Earth! I knew I was going to survive!

I will forever be grateful for those Vet Angels who never once questioned the dire condition of my health and did all that was within their power and hearts to help me.

By the end of the day I could even eat and stand up! Life was going to be good from now on. I had to stay at the clinic for two more days, and then I went home. To Ark Animal Sanctuary. To Lorraine. To all of the Angels I was yet to meet who were going to help me find a new Furever Home, never to be ‘unwanted’ again.

Thank you for reading my story. One thing that makes me sad is I am not the only one this happens to. Every day unwanted kittens, and puppies, are born because people don’t get the parent animals spayed or neutered. So much suffering of little innocent ones like me can be prevented if everyone joins in on the responsibility.

So please do your part and spay or neuter your pets.

And when you look outside at night and see lightning bugs flickering in the darkness, let it be a reminder of all the homeless animals struggling to survive and how you can help make a difference.

Love and Hugs,

Lightning Bug
